2nd Lt Ermal L. Pinkley

Name is on "Tablets of the Missing" monument at Cambridge American Cemetery in Cambridge, England.  Awarded Purple Heart and Air Medal.  Reported missing in action or Buried at Sea.  Ermal was not recovered from the sea. Service number 2069110.  On the World War II Honor Roll.  Ermal's mother was Irma Pinkley of 215 S Nogales Ave in Tulsa.  He was born June 29, 1924 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps on April 8, 1943.  He was awarded the Purple Heart and Air Medal posthumously.  He attended Daniel Webster High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma and was a member of the Assembly of God Church.  He received his wings and commission at San Marcos, Texas on August 28, 1944.  He served overseas two months as Navigator-Bombardier.  Ermal died on February 3, 1945 in action over the North Sea on return from a bombing mission over Berlin, Germany.

This photo is believed to be the training class for B-17 navigators held in Texas in 1944.  Lt Ermal Pinkley is the third from the left on the second row.  Ermal Pinkley received his wings and commission at San Marcos, Texas on August 28, 1944

 



On 3 Feb 1945 B-17 aircraft 42-102555 was badly damaged with flak and anti-aircraft fire on a bombing run.  The plane crashed into the North Sea after a bombing mission in Germany during World War II.  The pilot of the B17 was 2nd Lt Daniel G. Shoemaker O-573350 (KIA), co-pilot was 2nd Lt Roy F. "Fred" Moullen )-713536 (RTD), navigator 2nd Lt Ermal L. Pinkley O-2069110 (KIA), Enlisted Crew Members Sgt Armando O. Cantu 38073050 (KIA), SSGT Raymond J. Benton 37112067 (KIA), Sgt Ira Roisman 3233003 (RTD), Sgt Robert K. Buckley 39466622 (KIA), SSGT Quinto A Bastanzi 31161378 (KIA) and Sgt Gaylen L Snyder 15127378 (KIA).  2nd Lt Fred Moullen and Sgt Ira Roisman were the only two crew members to survive the crash.

Lt Shoemaker was from St. Louis, Missouri.  SSgt Quinto A. Bastanzi was from Warren, Rhode Island.  Sgt Robert K. Buckley was from Colville, Washington.  SSgt Raymond J. Benton was from Guthrie Center, Iowa.  Sgt Armando O Cantu was from San Antonio, Texas.  2Lt Ermal L.
