Gone, but not forgotten...

McBirney Elementary School

McBirney Elementary School, built in 1922 on a three-acre track in the heart of Garden City, represents the oldest of the three schools, Ryan said. It closed its doors in 1965 after serving Southwest Tulsa for 43 years.
She said the school later burned after the Tulsa Public School System began using it as a storage site.
Though McBirney Elementary School no longer exists at the site it once occupied, it continues to live in the minds of former students who once sat in its classrooms and played on its playground. Dan and Donna Coffey remember those days so well. The couple have been married for nearly 35 years and they both share fond memories of their school days at McBirney.

Pleasant Porter Elementary School
In 1929, Pleasant Porter Elementary School was built in Red Fork at the corner of West 41st Street and Union Avenue and closed its doors in 1980 after serving 51 years, Ryan noted. The large red brick building still stands at its original site near West Tulsa's Reed Park. Now headed by the Native American Coalition of Tulsa, the school serves Headstart students today.

William Howard Taft Elementary School
William Howard Taft Elementary School was built in 1959 in Winnetka Heights and closed in 1977. Still standing at its same location at 1020 W. 49th St., the school now serves as Winnetka Heights Christian School.
